Job Title: Research Data Analyst
Description
Advertisment

Research Department Overview:
The Research Department develops the investment strategies that the Trading Department then implements within our client portfolios. Our approach is to create systems (i.e., investment rules) that will consistently beat the markets. We then pull in the latest macro economic and market data, process it through our investment rules and generate positions in each of the markets we trade.

Position Summary:
Data is central to our Research Department. Data Analysts will work as members of research project teams, data services, or system processing teams, delivering superior data services to several mission critical functions of the Research Department. These include:

1) Discovering and analyzing new data sources supporting demand for new investment ideas
2) Maintaining and delivering accurate, timely, and consistent data content to support production of high precision investment indicators
3) Developing effective data processes for constantly improving confidence in our data content

Bridgewater provides in depth training on markets through various classes and extensive data training via group project work and mentorship. After the initial training and testing period, new Data Analysts will have personal responsibility for the quality of data used in assigned projects and processes. Their performance will determine their pace of growth and exposure to the different areas and roles in the Research Department. As a Research Data Analyst, you will partner with highly motivated, demanding, and “top-notch” investment and technology teams.

Responsibilities would include a combination of the following, depending on the specific team placement:
• All data quality aspects of the project or process (macro economic, industry, fundamental, market data, etc.)
• Accurate and timely execution of the recurring data processing tasks (data feeds, data quality checks, etc.)
• Investigating, gathering, and maintaining financial and economic data related to the markets we trade
• Contributing to the improvement and streamlining of the data collection process
• Custodianship of the content used in research process: data reference, tools, processes, standards, and training documentation
• Developing data quality metrics

Position Requirements, Aptitude, and Relevant Interests:
• Bachelor's degree, demonstrating an excellent academic and extracurricular track record
• Debugging and problem solving skills; likes to take things apart and see how they work
• Ability to approach and resolve problems in a logical and structured fashion while building and weighing trade-off options
• Ability to think of “out of the box” solutions to problems balanced with the common sense to pick reasonable solutions
• Strong work ethic, persistent, and determined in problem solving
• Knowledge of or interest in financial markets and data

Preferred candidates would also meet the following criteria:
• Experience supporting Investment Research analysts
• Programming and database skills
• Matlab or other advanced computational tools
• Prior experience with macro-economic and market data vendors (e.g., Reuters, Bloomberg, Havers, Factset, Datastream, Compustat, Thompson, etc.)
