Black River Asset Management, an independently managed subsidiary of Cargill, Incorporated, is an asset management business with over $10 billion in assets under management, offices in twelve countries and more than 20 years of worldwide investment experience. Black River provides institutional and other qualified investors with alternative investment strategies. Black River offers a wide range of investment products supported by experienced investment professionals, rigorous risk processes and a well-established global infrastructure.

Due to the retirement of the long-tenured incumbent, Black River is looking to hire a successor leader for the Investment Risk Group (IRG), covering all private equity, and credit transactions with an investment horizon of one year or greater. This individual will partner with the Principals and Deal Committees, for credit and private equity, to offer risk management insight into the investment activities of the relevant Black River fund(s). The Senior International Credit Officer must be able to build credible working relationships with the Principals and Senior Portfolio Managers, proactively communicate their own independent perspectives, provide respected analysis including insightful analysis and data, and successfully manage through the occasional conflicts that ensue. The successful candidate will take over an existing organization with well defined processes, and be asked to quickly understand existing transactions continue their monitoring, aggressively understand and apply the existing processes, and look for opportunities for process improvements. The ideal candidate will come with material transactional expertise in private equity and credit and possess strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

This position will be based in Minnetonka, MN.

 

Principal Accountabilities:

• Work closely with Principals, Deal Committees and the Global Risk Manager to develop and provide the independent analysis that will help ensure that informed discussions of risk positions occur with that group, the Investment Committee and the CIO.
• Independently design and build, with an analyst, analytical tools for the identification and assessment of risk.
• Carry out independent projects for the Principals, drawing on internal and external resources.
• Oversee all relevant portfolio and transactional risk metrics, and any related investor or counterparty reporting.
• Independently analyze each transaction in terms of structure as well as all related financial metrics.
• Ensure active transaction monitoring by sourcing and evaluating ongoing information flows and identifying key investment risks and milestones.

Required:

• Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Finance, Accounting or equivalent.
• At least 10 years experience in directly related credit markets.
• At least 10 years of experience dealing with a wide range of international transactions.
• Well-developed inter-personal and communication skills, including the ability to clearly articulate professional opinions and influence senior investment professionals.
• Experience working in an asset management or large financial services organization with significant non-US activities.
• Demonstrated experience in evaluating a wide range of transactions.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to influence and manage conflict.
• A low ego, adaptable, team player that is comfortable working in a team-oriented, professional and collaborative culture.

Preferred:
• MBA/CFA
• Experience extending credit or making private equity investments.
